Just as temperature is shown in different scales (Fahrenheit versus Celsius), there are two scales for reading air quality data: air quality index (AQI) versus micrograms per meter cubed (µg/m3). Hourly values for particle (PM2.5) readings are recorded in µg/m3, while the AQI is a rolling average of data from previous hours. The AQI is an index for reporting air quality, meant to help you understand what local air quality means to your health. The numeric values of the AQI should not be confused with the hourly values.

Air quality data is from monitoring stations in Fairbanks and North Pole, and may not be representative of your neighborhood. Air quality conditions can vary dramatically from one location to another and change more rapidly than monitor data reflects. While the monitor data and forecasts provide general guidance, conditions at specific locations should be assessed on-site. (i.e. if the monitors are reading good air quality but the air is hazy and you can smell smoke take appropriate actions such as limiting prolonged exertion).
